Getting Married
Congratulations .
You are taking a big step and making a lifelong commitment. However, there are many arrangements to be made before you say “I Do”.
You should contact the Parish priest tp complete a prenuptial enquiry form and this will require the following:
- You must produce Baptismal and Confirmation Certificates. They can be obtained from the Parishes in which you were baptised. Write to the Parish Priest of that parish; he will send them on to you.
You must notify the Registrar of Marriages, in writing, at least three months before the date of the marriage.
Before getting married you must establish that you are free to marry. You must be 18 years of age, not be already married or be related to your fiancee..
You must get a Letter of Freedom, a statement from the Parish Priest of your home parish that you have not been married already. If either you or your fiancé(e) has lived for substantial periods (more than six months) as an adult away from the home parish, you need Letters of Freedom from the parishes of the areas in which you have lived.
You will need to give at least six months notice of time and date of the wedding to your church.
- If only one of you is a Catholic check out the requirements for a mixed marriage.. (link to http://www.catholicireland.net/gettingmarried/steps/mixed.htm)
- If either of you have been married before, you will probably need an annullment before you can be remarried. (link to http://www.catholicireland.net/gettingmarried/steps/annulment.htm)
You may be required to attend a pre-marriage course and your priest can advise you about that.
The Ceremony
The Catholic Ireland website has very comprehensive information about arranging the wedding, the flowers, the ceremony, the vows etc.
